History of the Singing Bowls
Perhaps their history reach the mythical continent of Atlantis and has remained alive mainly through oral transmission. It was believed that using sounds coming out of the singing bowls the inhabitants could free and control cosmic powers.
The sound generated by the singing bowls has played an important role in religious cults. In Buddhism and Hinduism, sound is not only a part of worship practice but also one of the ways of achieving a state of purity and self-realization. It was for this reason that playing bowls was a part of religious rituals.
The bowls belong to the bell family (sometimes called resting bells). They originate from the Tibet area, found both within shamanistic rituals of the Bon tradition and Buddhist meditations. The bowls were used by their owners not only to play, but also as everyday items. The flight of thousands of Tibetans before the Chinese invasion in 1959 contributed to spreading the singing bowls around the world.
The bowls used to be cast out of alloy containing up to 12 different metals which had an influence on the quality of sound. Each metal represented a planet of our Solar System and its archetypal quality. Gold – Sun, silver – Moon, copper – Venus, iron – Mars , tin – Jupiter, led – Saturn etc. Nowadays the bowls are produced mostly from gunmetal bronze (red bronze), whose composition may sometimes vary slightly. A growing number of bowls for tourists are produced from brass. Antique bowls that were produced in kilns, the majority of which disappeared about 90- 100 years ago, are in great demand. They are characterized by their unique sound and power. In the manufactureing process bowls are sometimes tuned, this is how their sound gets its essential character. As well as Tibetan bowls one can also find Japanese, Nepali, Bengal and Assam bowls, as well as bowls made of glass.
